Having just graduated from design school in the middle of a pandemic and running my own small label I have learnt how to create collections and stay on top of trends and how to read the market. The pandemic has pushed me to think outside the box and create pieces that bring people joy.
For me Fashion is a necessity and every single person is affected by the world of fashion whether they think they are or not. Fashion can bring the world together by blending different elements of different cultures as inspiration behind a collection. I grew up with a hybrid identity with parents who were born in one country and raised in another this helps me as a designer because I am able to understand what people from different cultures need in their wardrobes. My childhood has shaped me into being the designer I am today and pushes me to reach a global audience.
My inspiration for this collection was my upbringing. I grew up in India with Indian parents who had never lived in India before. My parents were born in Africa and raised in different parts of the world. The national dress of India is the sari and I grew up watching the women in my family drape saris on themselves from different parts of the world such as India, France, London, Hong Kong and Africa. These saris represented my life as I was raised in India as an Indian but with western views on the world.
My collection is a representation of who I am which is someone who is rooted to her culture but loves to explore different avenues of the world of Fashion. This collection is based on the drape of a saree and blended with the idea of being a sexy, edgy , cultured hybrid woman. This woman doesn't call one place her home because she feels the entire world is hers.
